A. The research area of Computer Engineering:
This area contains two major fields.
- Design of embedded systems. This field includes
- Embedded systems: Design of hardware and software to obtain the optimal system performance and manufacturing cost. Ex: the embedded system design of Linux-based, ARM-based, SOPC-based, Network-based, Wireless-based, Real-time OS.
- SOP-based embedded systems: Based on the structure of SOPC-based hardware, develop all kinds of Real-time Microkernel and related testimony and development system and integrate with Linux-based Personal Computer.
- OP-based algorithm processing system: Based on the structure of SOPC-based hardware, design every kind of processing unit for arithmetic, image processing and graph recognition and integrate with SOPC-based embedded system and Linux-based personal computer to form an algorithm processing system.
- Design of VLSI circuit systems. This field includes
- SOC-platform IP technology: Design and develop SOC-platform related IP technology like 6502, ARM v4 "...", etc.
- Design of application-specific IC: Ex: data compression/decompression, Viterbi decoder, RSA encryption/decryption, AES encryption/decryption, ECC encryption/decryption, IEEE1394 data link layer and high speed USB controller.
- Design of SOC-based algorithm processing unit: Ex: design of processing unit for image processing and graph recognition.
- Cell-based IC: Ex: design of CAD Tool and Layout for Placement & Routing, Power & Timing Analysis, Optimization Algorithms.
- Low-power IC: Ex: the design of Bus and Cache Memory.
B. The research area of Electronic system:
This area contains two major fields.
- The design of analog system. This field includes
- RF system: Ex: microwave component, EM interference and compatibility, wireless transceiver systems.
- Analog IC design: Ex: design and layout of analog IC, IC design of planar surface monitor, power management, driver IC design, sensor IC design and design of consumer-specific electronic equipment.
- Technology and application of power electronics: Ex: recycled energy, electrical energy transformation, power reservation, power quality, power loss management in unloaded condition.
- The communication and signal processing. This field includes
- Technology and application of communication networks: Ex: protocol design of network communication, system design and performance analysis of communication networks, design and applications of broadband mobile networks and the technology of multimedia communication.
- Wireless communication Systems: design of multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) structure, estimation of communication channel parameters, noise suppressing ( multi-user detector and beam-former ), baseband design of WiFi/WiMax/WCDMA , access technology of next generation wireless communication, coding technology.
- Communication signal processing: Ex: design of baseband transceiver systems, real time signal system, applications of adaptive filter and the compression of audio signal.
- Image processing and visual applications: Ex: image compression, image analysis, graph recognition, video communication, applications of color and vision.
C. The research area of Optoelectronic and Semiconductor Engineering:
This area contains two major fields.
1. Optoelectronic engineering. This field includes:

Display and lighting technologies: Ex: liquid crystal display, field emission display, light emitting diode (LED), white light LED, and organic LED.
- Optical communication and fiber sensing technologies: Ex: system design and performance analysis of optical communication network, design and applications of optical fiber components or subsystems, design of optical fiber sensing systems.
- Micro-optics and optical component/systems: Ex: diffraction optics, micro optics, photonic crystals, and design and simulation of optical and micro optical systems.
- Nano- and bio-photonic devices and systems: Ex: Fabrication and characterization of nano materials, simulation and fabrication of nano devices, deep submicron device theory, design and applications of bio photonic sensors.
2. Semiconductor engineering. This field includes:
- Semiconductor materials and devices: Ex: growth and characterization of semiconductor materials, simulation and fabrication of semiconductor devices, and design and applications of semiconductor lasers.
Thin-film technology and Integrated circuits. Ex: growth of thin films, plasma technology, fabrication of thin-film transistor, design of integrated circuit, and development and applications of integrated optics technology. |
